What can you expect from a chic all-inclusive in Costa Mujeres
When I touched down in Cancún in December (2024) and headed north to the Costa Mujeres, I was eager to see how SLS Playa Mujeres, the first all-inclusive resort of the SLS brand, would combine style, luxury, and the signature SLS buzz . . Just opened in November 2024, the place is still working out a few kinks in terms of service, but that’s to be expected from a brand new hotel. Having reviewed dozens of high-end resorts in Mexico over the years—from boutique hideaways to five-star enclaves—I’m always eager to see if a newcomer can bring their own unique vibe. I’m happy to say that SLS Playa Mujeres feels both fresh and familiar, offering an exotic beach vacation that stays true to SLS’ forward-thinking design DNA.
A sweet introduction
Located in a private, gated area of Costa Mujeres—about 30 kilometers from Cancún International Airport—SLS Playa Mujeres is nestled among lush greenery and sparkling architecture. Living roofs, swaying palm trees, and manicured gardens weave a nature-oriented element into the modern silhouette of the property. Despite its quiet feel, you are not cut off from the top attractions: the ferry terminal to Isla Mujeres is conveniently close if you like snorkeling, local cuisine, or exploring the island’s lively street art.
Inside, you’ll see an elegant yet welcoming design that reflects the SLS’s cosmopolitan roots. Warm woods, airy architecture, and thoughtful lighting ensure that the lounge feels contemporary without being flashy. Add in the friendly staff, and the resort is set up for a stylish, easy getaway—though there are still a few soft spots as the resort finds its footing.
Pets are welcome (with caveats)
Because I always travel with my service dog Poppy, I am especially aware of how the resorts I visit handle their pet policies (they are different from service dog policies). SLS Playa Mujeres allows dogs, but with restrictions: puppies are not allowed in the pool areas or restaurants, not even outside. If you’re looking for a hotel specifically where pups get five-star pampering, the region has some of the best dog-friendly resorts. But if your vacation is all about the SLS experience, and you want your pup to be with you in your own space – Poppy loved sitting on our furnished balcony with its sea breeze and early morning zoomie runs on the beach – the resort still fits the bill.
Pools, parties, and Privilege lounge
One of the main ways to escape from the heat is the pool, and SLS Playa Mujeres delivers with plenty of options. There is an adults-only Privilege lounge, the third such SLS lounge worldwide (joining Dubai and Baha Mar). Expect curated music, a stylish crowd, and bartenders mixing creative cocktails throughout the day. I enjoyed the energetic vibe—especially if you’re here with friends or a bach party.
If you prefer a little excitement, you can easily slip away to cool pools away from the main action or hit the family-friendly swimming pool if you’re traveling with the kids. While the selection of poolside snacks could be extensive, the staff is friendly and attentive, and the cocktails I sampled did not disappoint.
A beach for breezy days
While the pools are popular, the resort’s beach offers the best experience. The resort sits behind a beach of pure white sand that meets clear blue water. The beach was also free of the Sargassum (seaweed) that often plagues Cancun’s beaches. Inviting lines of cabanas and loungers run along the beach, and the waitstaff will swing by refreshing drinks or bringing light bites. It’s the perfect spot for those who love to surf the gentle waves or need some time to unplug under the Caribbean sun.
If you like a little adventure, consider water sports like paddle boarding or jet-ski rentals, or hop over to Isla Mujeres for a day of exploring. But I’ll admit, there’s something fun about sitting with a cold mezcal cocktail (there are plenty of premium labels here) and the sparkling ocean at your feet.
SLS Elite for an advanced experience
If you’re celebrating a special occasion—or want to dial up the indulgence—consider upgrading to an SLS Elite room or suite. These accommodations come with amenities such as private lounge access, preferred restaurant reservations, exclusive beach access, and personal check-in. Some bi-level rooms, with private rooftop jacuzzis and panoramic ocean views, are perfect for intimate gatherings or group getaways. SLS Elite guests also enjoy service, a premium spirits package, airport transfers for extended stays, and the exhilarating Ciel Spa hot tub experience. You even get handy water bottles and chic beach totes to use around the resort—subtle touches that emphasize sustainability and style.
In my opinion, the Elite tier is a natural fit for honeymoon couples, bachelorette parties aiming for that VIP vibe, or any traveler looking to add a layer of pampered luxury. It ensures you won’t have to worry about making dinner reservations at peak times, and dedicated services make your stay feel more personal.
18 places to eat and drink
An all-inclusive experience thrives or fails on its food, and SLS Playa Mujeres aims to impress with 18 restaurants and bars spread across the property. Caracol, helmed by James Beard award-winning Chef Hugo Ortega of Puebla, quickly became a standout for me. I enjoyed delicious Mexican cuisine that showcased bold flavors, fresh seafood, and innovative twists on classic recipes.
If you’re in the mood for a steak, Union is the resort’s answer to a high-quality steakhouse, with well-prepared cuts and a decent wine selection. Meanwhile, Fi’lia satisfies a craving for handmade pasta and wood-fired pizzas—perfectly paired with smoky mezcal, my favorite spirit. Although I wasn’t able to explore each location, the overall atmosphere is diverse enough to keep most palates happy.
Family-friendly meets social media
One thing I noticed and enjoyed about SLS Playa Mujeres is how it attracts a variety of guests—families, couples, solo travelers, and groups of friends. The resort includes amenities such as a kids’ club, designated family pool, and activities that cater to younger guests, making it a solid choice if you’re traveling with children. At the same time, adults-only places offer that grown-up vibe when you need a break. During my visit, I saw destination weddings in full swing, bachelorette parties toasting by the pool, and families exploring the beach—proof that you can find any speed that suits your mood.
Spa fun
Between poolside relaxation, beach walks, and late-night cocktails, make time for the Ciel Spa. Its light and cool design includes natural textures that set a relaxing tone. I treated myself to a deep tissue massage and felt the tension of my journey melt away. CBD hot stone therapy or the Royal Citrus Ritual also get good reviews. Groups of friends or couples may want to book treatments together for an extra dose of pampering.
