Germany’s conservatives will focus on ‘security first’ after the stabbing

Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder is calling for “immigrant borders to be closed” after an attack in the southern town of Aschaffenburg left two people dead, including a two-year-old child.

“Our motto must be security first,” said Söder, leader of Bavaria’s conservative Christian Social Union (CSU), on Thursday.

The CSU is partnering with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) at the national level, and elections will be held on February 23.

Germany is a humane country, says Söder. “But in the end, this cannot harm our people.”

The future CDU/CSU government will therefore have a “zero tolerance, zero tolerance” policy on immigration, Söder said.

Bavaria’s prime minister said he had agreed on a fundamental change in immigration policy with the CDU/CSU’s candidate for chancellor, Friedrich Merz.

The conservative bloc wants fewer people to enter Germany and more to leave the country, he added.

To do that, Söder said federal police must be allowed to return migrants to Germany’s borders and deportations must be increased.
