San Diego – Ludvig Åberg and Lanto Griffin shared Torrey Pines in Farmers Insurance, forcing an 86-minute delay and preventing dozens of players from finishing the second round.
Early leader Aberg battled to a 3-over 75, while Griffin had a 72 – on the South Course
Danny Walker was 5 under, and Chris GroteTup had a 69 to match the best round of the day and join Hayden Springer and sungjae im at 4 under.
Players battled strong, inconsistent winds rated at 35 mph on the famous coastal course better known as the Foggy Marine Layer despite the disruptive weather. Some lust moved the standing balls and ripped the hats off the heads before playing the marshals.
“Throw the score out the window,” said Griffin, who earned his PGA Tour card at Q-School last month. “[On] A typical day, 72 is good for this golf course, and today was just grinding. … to go to [the 13th] The tee, it started going 35 miles an hour, maybe, so there were some shots like the 13 tee that were just brutal, [or the] The 9 Tee is blazed straight to the left. It was kind of hanging on for dear life, try and save pars on most holes and sprinkle in a birdie or two. “
The delay started at 2: 05 pm local time and lasted until 6: 31 PM, forcing the players to play quickly in a slightly reduced wind by completing their rounds.
The North course is heavily exposed to the sea, so the wind was brutal for players like World No. 4 Cideki Matsuyama, who could only watch in disgust as his Butts went past as he circled around the target. Matsuyaa still holds a 75 and makes the cut at 1 under.
In the opening round, scores on the North Course (70.13) are significantly better than those on the South Course (72.16). Because of the wind, both scores – the South Course (75.53) and the North Course (75.2) – were very high on Thursday.
“It was very difficult,” said Eric Cole, who was shot three times after managing to finish his 71 times before the common. “It started to hit our ass like the second or third hole, so we had six solid holes of really heavy winds. After that it almost came down to the bottom and it was very variable and very different. I know a lot. I know a little bit, but it seems like it’s more gusty and [was] Kind of changed directions a little bit, so it made it difficult. “
No one had a bogey-free round while battling the wind that blew clouds of dirt and sand into the Pacific ocean every afternoon.
A brush fire also broke out about four miles south of Torrey Pines and burned three acres near the UC San Diego Campus, but firefighters quickly halted its progress, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue.
Some players do not wait for the restart of play. Max Homa, the Max hero of this event, from stoppage time with just three holes left to play, pointed to the flaming diseases in his second straight round of obscurity.
Amateur Luka Clanton, a Florida State junior, moved up the leaderboard before making three bogeys amid the worst of the wind. He chose to stop the day with a Tee TEE shot on the 17th sitting on the right, where he will start his second Round on Friday.
