Luol Deng has opened up about the terrifying ordeal of being misdiagnosed after falling ill while playing for the Bulls in 2013.
“If you remember, that year we went to the playoffs, the year D. Rose was injured by it,” said Deng recently on the program. The Knuckleheads Podcast. “We were playing Brooklyn, and there was a fever going around the team. One of the doctors suggested that, because my fever was so high, I might have meningitis. Suddenly, they sent me to the hospital. When I got to the hospital, they received me badly. They ended up saying that my fever was too high, and they ended up operating on my spine.”
It turned out that Deng did not have meningitis and subsequently had to deal with complications from the surgery, including a spinal fluid leak and loss of control of his body.
He wanted to sue the Bulls, but he decided against it because all he wanted to do was come back and play.
“I ended up missing the play-offs,” said Deng. “What happened that year was a dispute with the NBPA and other things about me suing the bulls because of what happened.” But I knew that if I sued the bulls, I would never play basketball again. to win the case, to prove that things went wrong and this could end the job but I wanted to withdraw from it and said, ‘Yo, I’m not suing anybody. I’ll just go. I’ll be right back.’”
Deng is back, just traded to the Cavs.
“There is no match,” said Deng. “It’s like you know, every game I was given a chance to show that I’m healthy. And as the year goes on, like you said, I’m the leading scorer. I averaged 20 points.
“The next thing I know, I was traded to Cleveland, and I still believe the move was made, because I played enough games to show that, you know, I was healthy. That’s when the group started to disperse, and after I left, you started to see people being shaken, Thibs being shaken and so on.”
