What is TGL, the golf league created by Woods, McIlroy?
Two of golf’s greatest names have come together to bring fans of the game a new experience. Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are the brainchild of TGL’s interactive, technology-enabled golf league.
The league has partnered with the PGA Tour to offer a first-of-its-kind experience that allows fans to watch teams of top golfers compete in an up-close-and-personal environment inside a custom-built arena.
Here is more information about TGL:
What is TGL golf?
Established in August 2022, TGL is a professional, 3-on-3 golf league featuring six teams made up of four PGA Tour golfers who participate in two-hour matches inside the SoFi Center, TGL’s custom-built facility at The Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
What does TGL stand for?
TGL stands for Tomorrow Golf League. The name comes from TMRW Sports, a company founded by Woods, McIlroy and former NBC golf executive Mike McCarley to focus on producing technology-based businesses in the world of sports and entertainment.
How do TGL matches work?
There are two times for each TGL match. The first session includes a triple, nine-hole, 3-on-3, one-shot format. The second session is singles, where players go solo, facing each other for six holes, with each golfer playing two holes during the session.
-
The course inside the SoFi Center is mixed with various technologies and covers an area of approximately 97 by 50 yards, roughly the size of a football field.
-
Players hit the tee boxes of real grass, fairways, roughs and sand on a giant simulation screen more than 20 times the size of a standard golf simulator.
-
The technically landscaped greens feature slope-changing jacks to create a variety of play on every TGL hole.
-
Each hole has one point. If two teams are tied at the end of regulation, overtime determines the winner.
-
Overtime: TGL overtime is similar to penalties in soccer. Golfers compete head-to-head until a team successfully hits two shots closer to the pin than their opponent.
-
Shot clock: Each match features a shot clock that displays a 40-second countdown. Players must hit their shot within the allotted time or their team receives a shot clock violation and incurs a one-stroke penalty.
-
The 40-second time frame is based on the USGA’s recommendation for speed of play.
-
Time-outs: Each team has four time-outs per match, two time-outs per session. Timeouts not used during the first session do not carry over to the second session. For a team playing its own shot, a timeout may be called at any time until the shot clock expires. The opposing team may call a timeout until a player of the other team has touched the ball. A team cannot re-call timeouts while in the current draw.
-
Referee: The referee is on his way to enforce TGL rules and regulations, and another official monitors the action from the hall.
-
All golfers wear microphones during matches to bring fans closer to the action.
Each TGL event coincides with the PGA Tour schedule as part of the league’s relationship with the tour. Weekly games lead to playoffs, which culminate in one team winning the SoFi Cup.
What is the points system in TGL?
Similar to the NHL, the TGL uses a points-based system for regular season matches. In each game, teams can score up to two points over their regular season total. That total determines their place in the SoFi Cup standings.
A regulation win and an overtime win are both worth two points, while an overtime loss is worth one point.
The top four teams advance to the playoffs, which include a single-elimination semifinal round and a best-of-three tournament series.
