Ten people died in a house fire in Spain
At least 10 people were killed and others injured when a fire broke out in a retirement home near Zaragoza in northeastern Spain, emergency services said.
A fire broke out in the town of Villafranca de Ebro on Friday morning and local officials said that more than 80 people were living in the house at the time.
The center opened 16 years ago as a nursing home, according to local reports, but has since focused on caring for residents with mental health issues.
Emergency services were alerted at around 05:00 (04:00 GMT) on Friday and firefighters managed to put out the fire.
Ten people died and two others were taken to hospital, including one person whose condition was described as critical, the mayor of Villafranca de Ebro told Spanish radio.
Volga Ramírez told Cadena Ser that the tragedy may have been caused by a mattress fire in one of the rooms.
Eyewitnesses said that the damage caused by the fire in the one-story building was minimal and smoke inhalation was blamed for the large number of people who died.
The ages of those who died are not known.
The representative of the Spanish government in the region of Aragón, Fernando Beltrán, expressed his condolences to the dead and said that he will continue to monitor the progress of those in hospital and the investigation into the cause of the fire.
