Japan welcomed nearly 27 million tourists in September, a record, and their spending added 5.86 billion yen ($37.5 billion) to the economy. But incidents of vandalism, public drunkenness, and “over-tourism” at popular destinations have sparked debate about how to handle the flood of tourists and those who break the rules.

The suspect and his family arrived in Japan to visit the place on Monday (November 11), Jiji media said. Footage from the security camera led the police to arrest him at the hotel where he was staying on suspicion of using his fingernail to put five letters representing surnames on a wooden post, said Jiji.

US Embassy staff have visited the United States and are providing consular assistance, the spokesman said, declining to provide further details due to privacy concerns.
