A Redondo Beach man has been arrested in connection with a suspicious bag found at the courthouse

A Redondo Beach man was arrested Friday in connection with a suspicious bag left outside a Torrance courthouse this week, authorities said.

Court was called around 7 a.m. Wednesday after the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call about a suspicious package about 30 feet from the front door.

Sheriff’s Arson Explosives experts sent a robot to safely inspect and defuse the package, authorities said. The area was declared safe at 10:15 am, but the court remained closed for the rest of the day as a precaution.

Sheriff’s detectives and the Torrance Police Department investigated the incident and found a suspect: a 56-year-old man from Redondo Beach, authorities said.

The suspect, whose name has been withheld, was arrested Friday in the 2200 block of Belmont Lane on suspicion of using a destructive device, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

He was booked into the Torrance Police Department and is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail, according to authorities.

A police source familiar with the situation told The Times that the Torrance court package was “definitely intended to harm someone.” The source also said that the much-watched video captured a man taking out a pocket and a piece of paper that showed intent to harm and included allegations that the man had “killed before.”
