Guy Fieri, Sammy Hagar trucks carrying $1 million worth of tequila held in double heist after crossing border
Guy Fieri and Sammy Hagar’s tequila business took a hit after two of their trucks carrying $1 million worth of product were stolen.
The celebrity chef, 56, and former singer Van Halen, 77, own the tequila brand Santo Spirits. Representative Hagari told Fox News Digital that the trucks were seized on the weekend of Nov. 9 in Laredo, Texas.
The missing trucks were carrying 24,240 bottles of specially made Santo Blanco and Reposado and Extra Añejo, which were produced over a period of 39 months.
A spokesman for Hagari said “it appears this was an organized crime attempt where the trucks were illegally sold twice by various carriers who transferred the product to their trucks” after crossing the border from Mexico to Texas.
“For a growing company like Santo, it’s a real shame that something like this happened in the middle of our strongest year to date and right before the holidays!” Hagari said in a statement to Fox News Digital.
GUY FIERI WORKS WITH SAMMY HAGAR ON LATEST ROCKER TEQUILA
“Anyone who knows the business knows that this is a huge setback for any company in a very competitive market,” added the “I Can’t Drive 55” rocker. “But Guy and I will survive. Most of all, we’re glad no one was hurt during the crime.”
In an interview with People Magazine, Fieri said that he and Hagar heard about the robbery on November 14.
“We worked hard,” the Food Network star said. “This is our best year ever at Santo. We just had all this momentum, and now whatever’s on the shelves, everybody’s going to get it.”
Fieri told People that workers at their Mexican distillery are “on a 24/7 schedule right now” to replace the stolen tequila.
However, Fieri said it’s unlikely they’ll be able to fully stock their tequila during the holidays, when Santos Spirits typically sees the highest sales volume.
The “Ultimate Recipe Showdown” alum told People that “it’s possible that someone is trying to break the momentum” their tequila business has achieved in the market.
Fieri also expressed his surprise that two trucks were targeted by thieves.
“I mean, one is one. But now you have to have twice as many people to pull off a double heist,” Fieri said. “It seems like it’s too dangerous to take two trucks.”
Santo Spirits president Dan Butkus told People he’s concerned about how the theft of 440 cases of tequila will affect the distillery and its employees.
“Our distiller is an independent distiller that depends on our sales to support themselves and their team,” Butkus said. “My sales team, my marketing team, the entire Santo Spirits team depends on these sales.
“That’s the kind of episode that hurts me the most,” he added. “We have to support these people at the bar and in the US, and we can’t do it right now without the revenue from these lawsuits.”
People reported that the crime was being investigated by the Laredo Police Department, the Cargo Criminal Apprehension Team of Los Angeles and the security and recovery network CargoNet.
Fieri is offering a $10,000 reward to anyone who can find the missing trucks.
He told People that he hopes to bring back Extra Añejo. “It’s like the company’s treasure, something we’ve been working on,” he explained. “You can’t reproduce something that takes four years to make.”
“It’s like a movie — I never in a million years thought this would go down like this,” Fieri said of the robbery. “But it’s true.”
