NEWS: Boeing in a filing on Monday said it has sent notices to more than 2,500 workers in the states of Washington, Oregon, South Carolina and Missouri.
It is part of the debt-ridden airline’s plan to cut 17,000 jobs worldwide, or 10% of its workforce.
Those laid off were mostly engineers, technicians and non-union workers. most of them in Washington State, where nearly 2,200 workers received notices.
Layoffs vary between categories:
A Boeing Defense, Space & Security engineer told Reuters that all but two or three members of his 12-person crew had been let go.
Another said he was the only one in his group of about 20 people who received a layoff notice.
Both said they provide valuable support to manufacturing and design engineers.
The company told affected workers they would remain on Boeing’s payroll until January, to comply with the 60-day notice rule.
News of the November cuts was widely expected – Boeing said it began issuing notices last week – and another round is expected in December.
The announcements come as Boeing aims to restart production of its best-selling 737 MAX plane following a weeks-long strike.
The suspension ended earlier this month, disrupting the company’s flight operations.
