US embassy in Kyiv closed as ‘possible air raid’

The US Embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine, issued a warning after receiving “specific information about a heavy airstrike” that allegedly took place on Wednesday.

The embassy in the Ukrainian capital has been temporarily closed following the warning and staff are being asked to prepare to shelter in place.

“The U.S. Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens be prepared to evacuate as soon as an air alert is issued,” the statement said.

Employees have been asked to take the following steps:

  • Monitor local media for updates
  • Identify shelters in advance of any wind warning
  • Cover immediately when a wind alert is announced
  • Follow the instructions of Ukrainian officials and first responders in an emergency

This comes after Ukraine fired a US-supplied long-range ballistic missile at Russia on Tuesday, the first time Kyiv has done so in the 1,000-day war, which was authorized by President Biden on Sunday.

It was not the first time the embassy had issued a warning about possible danger and a major attack.

A similar warning was issued around Ukraine’s Independence Day on Aug. 24.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a revised nuclear doctrine on Tuesday, warning that any attack by Russia backed by a nuclear power could trigger a nuclear response.
