Jordanian police have cordoned off an area near the Israeli embassy after gunshots were heard, witnesses said.
AMMAN (Reuters) – Jordanian police cordoned off an area near the Israeli embassy in the capital Amman after gunshots were heard, witnesses said on Sunday.
Two witnesses said police and ambulances rushed to the Rabiah area, where the embassy is located, after hearing unusual gunshots.
Police have asked residents to stay in their homes as security forces search for the culprits, a security source said.

The area around the embassy that is heavily policed is where people protest against Israel. The kingdom has seen some of the most peaceful rallies across the region as anti-Israel sentiment rises over the war in Gaza.
Most of Jordan’s 12 million citizens are of Palestinian origin, either they or their parents were expelled or fled to Jordan in the war that accompanied the creation of Israel in 1948. Many have family ties across the Jordan River.
Jordan’s peace deal with Israel is deeply unpopular among many citizens who see the normalization of relations as a betrayal of the rights of their fellow Palestinians.
