Patrick Mahomes fined $14,000 for ‘act of violence’ during handshake celebration: report

The National Football League has been banning celebrations that might look like guns — but Patrick Mahomes apparently missed the memo.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback was one of the latest to use his arms in fashion to celebrate a touchdown, and touch his wallet.

The NFL Network reports that Mahomes was fined more than $14,000 for what the league called a “violent act.”

Many players were hit with penalties and fines because they would use the celebration, despite being innocent, on first downs.

Last month, the unit grew “concerned” about the number of “gun-related” celebrations, prompting them to come up with stricter penalties.

According to Spotrac, the NFL issued 17 fines for “obscene conduct” this season – there were no such fines in 2023.

“[The rule] it’s been on the books for years, and it hasn’t really come out yet… they didn’t really notice it until this year,” another league official told CBS Sports last month. “Now it’s almost an epidemic for them.”

“We don’t think it’s appropriate. … It sends the wrong message,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said at the time.

Mahomes was fined $50,000 last year for “insulting” an official.

This penalty is an insult to Mahomes’ injury, as the Chiefs lost for the first time this season after winning their first nine games.
