Gukesh defeated Ding Liren in Game 3; includes the finals of the World Chess Championship | Sports News

The young Indian bounced back on the third day after losing the opening game and drawing in the second against reigning world champions China in Singapore.

India’s Gukesh Dommaraju won the third consecutive World Chess Championship final against world champion Ding Liren of China to level the aggregate score at 1.5-1.5 in Singapore.

The 18-year-old Indian grandpa won Wednesday’s match after putting her Chinese counterpart under pressure. As a result, Liren fell behind the clock and lost the match on the third day of the finals.

Both teams are tied for the 14-game final, which will rest on Thursday, before Game 4 begins on Friday.

“It feels good,” said Gukesh after the third game.

“Two days ago I was happy with my performance. My performance today was much better, I feel good on the board and today I was able to overtake my opponent which is always nice.”

Gukesh lost in the opening match on Monday and admitted he felt better about himself in his first final against his 32-year-old opponent.

“Of course, I was nervous … it would be surprising if I said I wasn’t nervous, I was nervous,” Gukesh told reporters after the match.

“But after the game started, I calmed down … I thought I was playing good chess … then I turned around and turned around.”

The winners played to a draw in the second game, on Wednesday, going into the break tied.

At his age, Gukesh is the youngest player in history to challenge for the World Championship and will hope to surpass Garry Kasparov as the youngest undisputed world chess champion.

There are 14 game days and four rest days scheduled for the world chess crown.

The first player to get 7.5 points will be declared the winner and breaks will be arranged if the players are tied on seven points after 14 games.

Gukesh has come to the fore in cricket-mad India, with fans young and old following his run in the finals at Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore.
