A woman accused of nearly hitting a child while trying to speed a school bus in Plymouth will face charges after being taken into custody, police said Wednesday.
The video shows the SUV belonging to Brenda Mello, 59, allegedly swerving on Bourne Road to pass a school bus on Friday morning.
Alicia Tallent’s son, who was walking to the bus stop at the same time, was able to stop, narrowly avoiding the SUV that was running.
“He didn’t want to wait for other stops, I think the bus driver had said that he was crying at the stops before ours to try to get the bus to come to him,” said Tallent.
Mello was arrested Wednesday on charges of failure to stop for a school bus, reckless operation of a motor vehicle and assault with a dangerous weapon.
Tallent says her son was shaken up, but luckily he’s okay.
“It says on the back of the bus that it is not allowed to pass, the lights are on, the bus sign is out and the doors are open ready for the children to board,” said Tallent.
Mello is expected to appear in Plymouth District Court on Wednesday.
