Germany’s upcoming parliamentary elections will mark an important decision about the country’s direction, Chancellor Olaf Scholz told the Social Democratic Party (SPD) at a campaign conference on Saturday.
“There’s a lot at stake in Hell. We’re facing a key decision for our country, in one way or another,” said Scholz, who represents the SPD in the chancellor’s election expected in February, at a ceremony he presided over. group headquarters in Berlin.
“Now it’s about everything. If we take a wrong turn in Germany now, in this situation, there will be serious consequences.”
Security, cohesion, prosperity and jobs are at stake, Scholz said, stressing that now is the time to continue resolutely reviving Germany.
The SPD is fighting for reliable pensions, affordable rents, affordable health care and nursing care, Scholz said, sounding optimistic as his party seeks to regain ground lost in recent months to the opposition CDU/CSU.
“I know how to campaign. So some people will be surprised.”
After the collapse of Germany’s three-party coalition earlier this month, early elections are scheduled for February 23, following a confidence vote in December.
