France’s new Prime Minister Bayrou is aware of the challenges ahead

New French Prime Minister François Bayrou said on Friday that he is aware of the challenges he faces amid the country’s political and budget problems.

“No one knows better than me how difficult the situation is,” said Bayrou in Paris, hours after being appointed by President Emmanuel Macron.

Centrist Bayrou, whose predecessor Michel Barnier lost a vote of confidence last week, said he wanted to overcome divisions in French society and “break down the glass wall that has been built between citizens and power.”

However, it is unlikely that he will be able to command a majority in the National Assembly, and left-wing parties have said they will oppose his nomination.

France is at a political standstill as elections held in June and July failed to produce a clear result. At the same time, the country is facing a critical economic situation amid growing national debt and a large budget deficit.
