The man accused of killing UnitedHealth CEO Luigi Mangione is facing trial in New York Crime News

Mangione faces new charges in the United States that carry the death penalty.

Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, appeared in a New York court to face new charges including murder and larceny.

Mangione’s arraignment Thursday follows his transfer to New York from Pennsylvania after he waived his right to a jury trial.

Shackled at the ankles and wearing a blue sweater and beige pants, Mangione said nothing during his 15-minute appearance before United States Magistrate Katharine Parker in Manhattan.

The 26-year-old Ivy League graduate, who already faces multiple federal charges, has been charged with murder with a firearm, two counts of stalking and illegal use of a silencer, according to the complaint, which has not yet been arrested.

Court filings suggest Mangione could face the death penalty, if prosecutors seek it.

Mangione’s attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, said it is an “unusual situation” for a defendant to face federal and state charges at the same time.

“In fact, I have never seen anything like what happened here,” said Friedman Agnifilo.

According to the criminal complaint, Mangione traveled from Georgia to New York “with the intent to stalk and kill Brian Thompson”.

A notebook found on Mangione after his arrest at a McDonald’s restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania contains several handwritten pages “expressing hostility towards the health insurance industry and wealthy executives in particular”, according to the complaint.

The entries in August said “the target is an insurance company” because it “checks all the boxes”, while the October text described the purpose of “stalking” the CEO of an insurance company”, according to the complaint.

Police said the words “delay,” “deny” and “depose” were written on the shells found at the scene, recalling a phrase often used to describe insurance schemes to avoid paying claims.

When Mangione was arraigned, fans gathered outside holding signs reading “Life over wealth” and “Luigi set us free”.

James Dennehy of the FBI New York Field Office said Magione’s actions amounted to a “premeditated and targeted killing”.

“This alleged plot shows a negative attitude towards the people – it is considered that killing is the right step to satisfy their grievances,” said Dennehy.
