Officials are seeking an arrest warrant for Yoon, a South Korean national charged with the crime
South Korean officials have requested an arrest warrant for suspended president Yoon Suk Yeol, Yonhap news agency reported on Monday.
The Corruption Investigation Bureau is investigating Yoon for suddenly imposing martial law on December 3.
The office said that Yoon had ignored three summonses to come under investigation, Yonhap reported.
Yoon’s ill-fated attempts to impose martial law shocked the nation but were withdrawn hours later following massive public opposition.
Since then, South Korea has been in a political crisis. The National Assembly voted to impeach Yoon on December 14, and the Constitutional Court has started the necessary steps to make a final decision on whether the assembly’s vote is constitutional or not.
Choi Sang Mok has been acting president since Friday, after lawmakers voted to impeach then-acting Han Duck Soo, less than two weeks after Yoon was removed from the presidency.
Yoon called his political opponents “anti-state forces” and said he had declared martial law to protect the nation.
