Salah says new Liverpool deal ‘far away’ | Football news

Egyptian striker Mohamed Salah says he is far from extending his contract at Liverpool, which expires in the summer.

Mohamed Salah said talks over a new Liverpool contract have not progressed much after he starred again in the 5-0 thrashing of West Ham to help open up an eight-point lead at the English Premier League.

The Egyptian scored once and set up two more goals in Sunday’s game, taking his tally in all competitions this season to 20 and 17 assists in 24 Premier League and Champions League appearances.

Salah, along with teammates Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, is out of contract at the end of the season, meaning they can discuss free transfers with non-English clubs from January 1.

Reports in recent weeks have suggested a deal is imminent between the 32-year-old and the Reds, but Salah has dismissed the suggestions.

“We are a long way from that,” Salah told Sky Sports. “I don’t want to put something in the media and people start saying things, but nothing really happens.

“Now I’m focused on the team and I hope we win the Premier League.”

Arsenal and Chelsea have the chance to close the gap on Liverpool in the coming days but a record-equaling 20th title in the English top flight – and only the second in 35 years – is the leaders loss of current form.

“The only thing on my mind is that I want Liverpool to win the league and I want to be a part of it,” added Salah, who has been heavily linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League.

“That’s all I’m focused on. I will do everything possible to win the trophy. We are on our way but there are other groups trying to overtake us. We need to stay humble and get going again.”

Arne Slot has won 23 of 27 games since taking on the seemingly daunting task of stepping into Jurgen Klopp’s shoes at Anfield.

The Dutchman was asked if Salah is the best player in the world and said it is hard to disagree based on his stats this season.

“If you look at his numbers, you can’t deny that, but there are different players in different leagues who have high quality,” said Slot.

“But Mo is definitely there. He could have scored more goals today, but I also liked his level of work in the team off the ball.

“He is in a very good place. Let’s hope he can stay like this for a long time.”
