ONDC empowers small businesses, transforms e-commerce: PM Modi

The government-run Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) has empowered small businesses and revolutionized e-commerce, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday.

ONDC — a network of over 200 apps, including consumer apps and retail apps — was launched in 2021 to democratize e-commerce in India.

The Prime Minister said ONDC has been helping the growth and prosperity of the country.

“ONDC has been instrumental in empowering small businesses and revolutionizing e-commerce, thereby playing an important role in driving growth and prosperity,” PM Modi said in a social media post.

The Prime Minister said this while quoting the position of Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry.

Goyal noted that ONDC has changed the landscape of e-commerce; and bridge the gap between sellers and buyers.

ONDC is building a “robust and inclusive digital marketplace”, Goyal said. He added that last year, the network “not only achieved a number of important steps but also empowered businesses, especially small businesses, by creating their own playing field on the network”.

“By bridging the gap between sellers and consumers, ONDC continues to transform the e-commerce landscape!” Goyal said.

In the last three years, ONDC has seen more than 150 million transactions, over 200 networks.

The platform has more than 7 lakh sellers and service providers, with sellers from more than 600 cities and towns.

Buyers from more than 1,100 cities and towns transact through the network.

In addition, more than 7,000 farmers’ organizations are part of the platform, representing 35 lakh farmers.

About 50 percent of the beneficiaries are MSME Trade Enablement and Marketing Initiative (MSME-TEAM), which aims to help five lakh Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) by women entrepreneurs.
