Chicago PD says ‘will not help’ with upcoming ICE deportations

The Chicago Police Department said Monday it will not assist in upcoming deportations by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) across the Windy City, as President Trump vows to impose stricter border security measures across the country.

President Trump returned to the White House on Monday, and during his inauguration, he laid out plans to deal with problems related to illegal immigration and a weak border.

“First, I will declare a national emergency on our southern border. All illegal immigration will be stopped immediately, and we will begin the process of sending millions and millions of criminal aliens back to their places of origin,” Trump said, adding. that he would end arrests and releases and send troops to the southern border to repel what he called “a disastrous attack on our country.” I will direct our government to use the full and massive powers of national law enforcement to eliminate the presence of all foreign gangs and criminal networks, which have brought devastating crime to US soil, including our cities and inner cities.”

But despite President Trump’s vow to remove dangerous illegal immigrants and send them back to their home countries, Chicago officials have made their own vow not to follow through.

Chicago police say the municipal code includes a law that prohibits them from assisting immigration authorities with law enforcement based on immigration status. The department also noted that it does not record immigration status, nor does it share the immigration status of individuals with government authorities.

City law requires the director to respond to the scene if an immigration agency requests assistance with immigration enforcement.

If the request is to assist in immigration enforcement, the manager will reject the request, but if it is not related to immigration law, the manager will be subject to appropriate police action.

“To be clear, the Chicago Police Department will not assist or intervene in immigration enforcement in accordance with the City of Chicago Municipal Code,” the police department said in a statement. “As always, we will continue to enforce the law when crimes occur, regardless of the citizenship status of those involved.”

The police department released the statement a day after Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson doubled down on his vow to oppose Trump’s sweeping reforms aimed at removing dangerous immigrants accused of crimes from the United States if he returns to office.

The mayor’s office confirmed that the city will continue to comply with the Illinois Trust Act of 2017, which prohibits local law enforcement from participating in state immigration enforcement.

“Chicago stands strong: no matter the circumstances, our commitment to protect and support this city remains unwavering,” Johnson wrote in a social media post. “We will continue to fight for justice and safety for all who call this place home.”

Tens of thousands of illegal immigrants live in Chicago, even as residents plead with city officials about how there aren’t enough resources to provide for them. More than 20,000 immigrants have arrived in the city since August 2022, according to previous reports from Fox 32 Chicago, and thousands are housed.

Immigrants were angered by residents after it was reported to have cost the city $574.5 million as of August 2022. At an earlier city council meeting on December 3, residents protested a $60 million property tax increase that was proposed to help officials overcome $1 billion. budget deficit at the end of last year.
