Tyson Nash was known as “trouble” during his six years in the NHL playing for the St. Louis Blues and Phoenix COYOS, and it’s a title he accepted.
Now, now broadcasting the Utah Hockey Club after more than ten years as coyotes tv commentators, was the guest this week in this golf episode from golf, hockey, and his new gig.
But he told teammates Colt Knost and drew his reputation as “trouble” was born in about 10 years of hockey in minor languages.
“I was making 30,000 in Canada [dollars] Living in Syracuse, New York,” said Nash. “I work at Pizza Hut in the off-season, right? Bringing pizzas to pay for my training and pay, like a pro, I have to be a pro.
“And I got on that bus. I got beat up every night, you know, you get ordered to fight, you’re still grinding like you’re in the NHL, but you don’t have any money.”
So when an NHL coach came to him and told him they needed a player with his offensive skills, he was ready to do whatever it took.
“I think we were like a five-family hall on our team in St. Louis,” Nash said. So he goes, ‘I just want you to be a rat. I want to be the most hated player in the whole organization. If you can do that, you have a job here as long as you do that. ‘
“Other than that, he came back on the bus eating soggy subs and drinking beer. And I was like, it’s done. And literally for four or five years he was the most hated person on the face of the earth.”
Nash said it was against his personality, he didn’t like being in the snow. But on the ice, he had a target on his back.
“It was very difficult because it wasn’t difficult, but everyone wanted to kill me,” she said. “And that was difficult because I was afraid to die all the burning games. I was like, oh, my God, you are going to kill yourself and kill me tonight?”
